History

Photographed in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, this angel sculpture in Neoclassical style is carved on the tombstone of Mary Glover Thurman.

Mary Glover Thurman (1829-1916) moved to Atlanta in 1855 with her husband, a dentist.

The couple cultivated a flower garden so impressive that it became known throughout the city.

After her husband’s death, Mary began gifting her flowers to others. Her frequent visits to hospitals to bestow flowers on sick patients earned her the nickname “The Angel of Atlanta.”

It’s believed that the angel was sculpted by James Novelli, known for his cemetery work and war memorials.

She appears to be patterned after Woodlawn Cemetery’s Kinsley Angel, by famed sculptor Daniel Chester French (best known for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.).
